Kingston NY Property Tax Shift

The City of Kingston Common Council voted to shift the larger property tax burden back on businesses.  Just last month, the council voted to place 52% of the burden on homeowners.  That same council has voted 6-2 to split the tax burden almost evenly--homeowners will pay 49.6% and businesses will pay 50.4%.

The Open Space Institute has purchased a 20 acre piece of real estate in the Town of Kingston in the Bluestone Wild Forrest area in order to hand it over to the Catskill Forrest Preserve.  The area has commonly been used for hiking, mountain biking and hunting.  Another great move to protect and preserve an beautiful area full of important habitats.

Kingston NY Rondout BridgeThen Kingston NY metro area was rated as one of the most secure in the country by Sperling's BestPlaces.  Kingston was rated #86 of 379 metro areas in the US and came in ahead of the other Hudson Valley metro area of Poughkeepsie, Newburgh and Middletown.  In order to rank the metros, factors such as crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, environmental hazards, terrorism threats, air quality, life expectancy and job loss numbers were considered.
 
Avoid Contractor Scams

A new website has be created through the NYS Attorney General's office that offers tips to avoid dishonest contractors and allows users to search their database for contractors who have been subject to legal action or have had claims against them.  A search of contractors in the Hudson Valley reveals 42 business or individuals on the list.
 
Report on Housing Affordability

A report that ranked 223 Metro regions in the country on housing affordabilty placed the Kingston New York area as 133rd in the country and 28th in the region.  The report included data from the 1st Quarter of 2008.  The New York City area was listed as second to last, which is consistent with pattern of city residents moving Upstate--either as full-time residents or weekenders.
